When peace on campus was shattered

By Goutam Ghosh

A Korean student Cho Seung-Hui, who sprayed bullets in classrooms (he began much earlier at the dormitory) on April 16 morning snuffing out 32 lives at Virginia Tech University before turning the gun on himself, was stated to be a loner. MSN news states that he greeted his victims with a polite good morning before opening fire. The incident immediately grabbed headlines all over the world and left ripples in its wake. An animated discussion on the issue at a college almost a 17-hour flight to the east from Virginia.

Rudra: The campus police failed. They knew about the 911 emergency call after which two students were shot but there was no alert.

Rina (wringing her hands): Can't blame them. The campus security people never expected the killer to be on campus.

Faiza: The university administration failed.

Amir: Such killings have been going from time to time, but the US has done nothing to control the sale and possession of firearms. The gun laws of Virginia say clearly that children should not have access to handguns, and if an adult were to transfer possession of a firearm to a child, the adult would be held guilty.

Fingerprints on the charts

By Pradeep Chandrasekaran

Chai time this Monday morning at Sharewallah's office was wearing a more animated look than usual.
Since most of the punters loved punting in low-priced stocks, the weekend report that a government owned financial institution was looking to divest a substantial stake to a strategic investor had got them excited.
Punty: Do you think getting in a strategic investor will help the company to stage a turnaround?
Chorus: Yes, it will open up new business opportunities for the company.
Sage: Like what?
(confused silence)
Know All: You see, the company has accumulated losses of Rs 4,300 crore. Once the new partner is in, the losses will be wiped out and the company will come back into the black.

Beauty of a `provoked' bull

By Pradeep Chandrasekaran, Country Manager - India, Safety in the Market (www.sitm.com.au)

Beep, Beep Beep, went the mobile. Chotu wearily picked it up. Monday mornings meant more trading advice from his retinue of trading well-wishers, which included his broker, professional advisors, friends and his driver. But this was no trading message. All that the message said was "Provoked". It was from his former trading buddy Motu. He had grown fatter during the bull market. And why not? Unlike Chotu, his account had been growing. Though he hated to admit it, Chotu knew that the reason why they had drifted apart was the fact that the path of growth taken by their accounts was diametrically opposite.
